Additive Manufacturing (AM) Application / Design Engineer

Additive manufacturing – popularly known as 3D printing – is one of the most innovative and revolutionary manufacturing methods. At voestalpine, we are implementing this new technology while making use of our in-house expertise to develop it further. Customers benefit from our leading-edge competence throughout the value chain, which ranges from powder development to the delivery of finished products. Additive manufacturing (AM) uses electric arc or laser technology to fuse fine metal powders and or wire into complex and high-strength components. Starting with three-dimensional CAD data, AM enables the wasteless production of even the most complex shapes.

With the use of conventional technologies like milling, drilling etc., such structures would be impossible to produce or would require extreme efforts. Simply put, “printers” manufacture the components layer by layer. Depending on the application, various methods (Powder Bed or Direct Deposition Process with powder or wire) are used. A crucial part of AM is using the correct process parameters for each type of printing machine and material. If a specific process parameter is not already available, we develop it in-house.

We are currently looking to fill a Quality Engineer Position at our Houston, TX facility. The purpose of this role is to focus on additive manufacturing quality systems and quality assurance (powder to delivered part) with the key deliverable of measuring and mitigating risks in the manufacturing process (inquiry to invoice). The chosen candidate will be working as a member of a cross functional team of engineering, operation, and business development to develop, obtain and sustain AM Quality Systems.

Tasks:

• Take lead in developing and implementing quality standards and quality control systems according to the latest industry standards and best practices (PFMEA, DFMEA, control plans)
• Take lead in obtaining new quality certifications and renewal of existing certifications.
• Maintaining Quality Management System, monitoring and analyzing quality performance (including the calibration of instruments, COPQ report, RCCA report)
• Manage and compile documents for annual management review meetings.
• Perform inspection using measurement instruments, FaroArm and CMM.
• Perform in process inspection and testing between each processing steps to ensure quality specifications are met according to the control plan. Including inspection of powder and base material, post printing inspection, review heat treatment certificate and mechanical testing results, perform dimensional inspection of final product.
• Collaborating with operations managers and project leads to develop and implement controls and improvements.
• Ensuring that workflows, processes, and products comply with safety regulations and control plans.
• Take lead in non-conformance handling, root cause analysis and corrective actions (Incoming, In-Process, Vendor, Customer)
• Vendor Management and new vendor qualification
• Maintain and promote a positive and safe work environment.
• Other tasks as assigned (Supporting Metallurgist, Operations)

Experience, Skills and Personal Attributes

• Diploma or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, diploma in Quality Engineering an asset.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
• Minimum of 1 years’ experience in additive manufacturing is preferred.
• Knowledge in basic principle of powder bed fusion (PBF) and other AM technologies is preferred.
• Ability to understand and follow procedures and industrial standards.
• Skills in metrology and experience with quality systems and NDE.
• Background knowledge in metallurgy is preferred. (carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys)
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, 5S, Six-Sigma and continuous improvement processes.
• Exhibits proficient technical writing skills.
• Proven adaptability and flexibility as a part of team.
• Strong ability to plan, prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
• A demonstrated passion for additive manufacturing and quality systems.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability, high level of self-motivation.
• Attention to details is critical.

**MUST BE ELIGIBLE TO ACCESS, POSSESS AND TRANSFER CONTROLLED INFORMATION UNDER USA ITAR PROGRAM AND CANADA CGP PROGRAM (which largely means citizenship and/or landed residence in either USA or Canada in addition to clearance of birth country)

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
