The Department of Political Science and International Relations is committed to the liberal arts tradition of intellectual curiosity, academic rigor, and a pluralistic and diverse curriculum. We provide students with a solid understanding of the theories, practices and institutions of politics, but also with an appreciation of how to create a more just and humane world. Our courses cover every corner of the globe and prepare students to be keen political observers and actors. To supplement coursework, we also provide internship, community service learning, and study abroad opportunities that encourage learning outside of the classroom. The department houses two separate majors. The Political Science major focuses attention on the shared and contending ideas, values, institutions, and processes of public life. The International Relations major is an interdisciplinary field of study rooted in political science that provides students with a holistic understanding of international affairs. The department also offers a Masters of International Relations (MAIR) degree, including a BA/MA option for our undergraduate IR majors.

Detailed Description:

The Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of San Diego invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in public law.

Successful candidates should be committed to excellent, inclusive teaching at the lower and upper division levels, and engage in student advising. Candidates will pursue a scholarly agenda and engage in service at the departmental, college, and university levels. The teaching load is three courses per semester. The University of San Diego is a teaching focused liberal arts institution, and all faculty in the department of Political Science and International Relations are committed to offering a range of courses aligned with their interests and in support of the departmental curriculum.

The candidate will offer courses that address the relationships between the law, politics, and structural inequity, with a specific expectation that they will regularly offer upper division courses in Constitutional Law and lower division courses in political theory and/or race and ethnic politics. Within the scope of these parameters, the position is open to teacher-scholars of a variety of sub-disciplinary approaches to public law, including law & society, political theory, judicial politics, legal institutions, critical legal studies, politics of race & ethnicity, feminist legal theory, or comparative law. The successful candidate will also contribute courses in other core areas of departmental curricular need and participate actively in student advising, including especially pre-law advising.

In addition to outlining their own interests in and approaches to teaching and research in a liberal arts environment, candidates should also describe how their research or teaching connects to one or more of the following three cluster themes in the College of Arts and Sciences. (link to cluster hire here: These clusters will include new faculty from multiple academic disciplines who have research or teaching interests in one of the following substantive themes: Borders and Social Justice, Technology and the Human Experience, and Climate Change and Environmental Justice. The goal of these themed clusters is to facilitate collaborative research, provide opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching, and build community among faculty and students throughout the University. Candidates are encouraged to interpret these themes broadly and creatively to indicate how their teaching and research in political science and public law may be understood to intersect with one or more of the three themes.

The successful candidates will:

• Hold an advanced degree, preferably a doctorate or other terminal degree. ABD candidates will be considered on a case by case basis.
• Have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, mentoring undergraduates, and fostering a climate of inclusion and diversity.
• Please note that most positions will be hired at the Assistant Professor level.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
