FarmsSHARE Faith Community Organizer

JOB SUMMARY

The FarmsSHARE Faith Community Organizer is a full-time (40 hrs. /week) exempt position with the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) through December 31, 2025, with the possibility of continuation depending on funding availability. They will be responsible for supporting twelve United Methodist, African Methodist Episcopal, and African Methodist Episcopal Zion congregations in expanding their food ministry programs by participating in FarmsSHARE. FarmsSHARE is a local food system model that aligns a network of food hubs, small sustainable farms, and farmer cooperatives to aggregate local, seasonal foods.

The FarmsSHARE Faith Community Organizer may work remotely from anywhere in North Carolina or out of our Pittsboro, NC office. The position will require extensive travel throughout North Carolina (approximately 10 - 15 days per month). The position reports to the Local Food Program Director.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIESGENERAL ADMINISTRATION
  • Assist financial and programmatic monitoring to ensure compliance, progress towards objectives and expected results, and work plan and budget adherence.
  • Assist the Local Food Program Director and CFSA staff in identifying and pursuing funding opportunities to support the Farm Services and Lomax programs.
  • Work with the Communications Team to develop content for the monthly electronic newsletter, The Grower's Toolbox.
  • Increase recognition of and engagement with our mission, programs, and impact by engaging current members and recruiting new members.
PARTNER RECRUITMENT
  • Conduct outreach to rural Methodist congregations to gauge interest in being a FarmsSHARE network partner and develop a shared understanding of mission alignment and values between the congregation and CFSA.
  • Collaboratively assess the specific needs and priorities of the local community regarding food security, nutrition, and access to healthy food. Identify gaps and opportunities for support, considering the resources and capabilities of the congregation.
  • Assess existing congregational assets and infrastructure to support the food ministry and identify production planning, storage, refrigeration, food handling, and distribution needs.
  • Develop a shared vision and action plan that outlines the partnership's goals, objectives, desired outcomes, and the specific activities, responsibilities, timelines, and resources needed.
  • Assist in developing an outreach and community engagement plan to raise awareness about the food ministry.
IMPLEMENTATION
  • Support the launch of the food ministry and establish operational processes.
  • Establish partnerships with farmers, food hubs, and food box distribution partners.
  • Implement monitoring and evaluation processes to track progress.
  • Support creating a community of practice with food hub and community food distribution partners.
  • Regularly convene meetings that bring together all relevant stakeholders to knowledge-share and problem-solve.
  • Support financial planning for the long-term viability of food ministries.
EVALUATION
  • Support monitoring, evaluation, and process improvement to build congregational capacity to sustain its food ministry.
  • Support evaluating the overall success and impact of each participating congregation's food ministry.
  • Document lessons learned and best practices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least three years of relevant experience with community outreach and organizing (five years preferred).
  • At least three years of experience working in faith communities (five years preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience working with food relief programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, including experience interacting and working with diverse communities, neighborhoods, and populations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and work comfortably in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work well within a team and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Pro applications.

The salary range for this position is $52,000- $54,000 commensurate with experience. In addition, CFSA offers generous vacation, retirement, and health insurance benefits.

BENEFITS CFSA offers:

  • Flexible work scheduling
  • 15 days paid vacation per year after the first six months of employment
    • After five years, this increases to 20 days per year
