Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, determines facility compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies that pertain to the Health Protection/Lowcountry Region Food Safety Program.

Performs the number of required compliance graded inspections of permitted and non-permitted retail food service establishments within required time frames, and initiate actions as required to ensure compliance with Regulation 61-25, Retail Food Establishments. Performs compliance inspections of permitted and non-permitted facilities to determine compliance with state regulations, standards and guidance. This would include inspecting complex operations with special processes.

Maintains all required Quality Assurance/Quality Control activities including but not limited to proficiency testing and standardization. Provides complete, detailed reports of inspections and outline any necessary enforcement action.


Conducts and completes complaint investigations as requested and in accordance with applicable SOPs and program guidance.


Investigates suspected cases of foodborne illness.


Provides programmatic consultation to food service industry personnel and other interested persons. Performs pre-operational inspections and permits new facilities.


Performs other duties as required, which includes attending periodic staff meetings and training.

Daily travel throughout the state to Retail Food Establishments. May be required to drive personal vehicle if a state vehicle is not available.

Must have a valid driver's license and ability to operate personal and state-owned vehicles. Possesses excellent written and oral communication skills. General knowledge of functions and interdependence of Food Safety, public health laws, and sanitation principles and practices. Must be capable of dealing effectively with the public and regulated community.

Ability to bend, climb, and stoop to take samples and conduct inspections. Ability to access non-traditional work environments. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Able and willing to work in all weather conditions. Able to make visual observations of facilities, samples, plans, specifications, and reports. Able to distinguish between color variations. Able to conduct field tests using delicate instruments and chemicals requiring steady hands. Ability to travel daily throughout the state as program or region workloads demand. Overnight travel, weekend, after hours, and holiday work may be required. Subject to 24/7 call back due to emergencies. This position requires successful completion of prescribed technical coursework and passing any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: Some positions require the possession of a valid driver's license. Some positions require the successful completion of specialized courses in health physics or certification as a health physicist. A high school diploma or GED and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

  • Food Protection Manager Certification.

Immunization: All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's (Lowcountry/Health Protection).
