Compost Project: Waste=Food
The Route

The Pick Up - At Edge of the Woods, specially designated barrels are filled with compostable organic waste. This waste stream includes all of the pulp from the store’s juice bar and scraps from the produce department. Four times a week, these barrels are picked up using a wooden bicycle trailer, custom built for this application.

The Transport - Taking primarily flat back-roads, the waste is transported to the Common Ground School on a single-speed bicycle. One way the route is 2.2 miles. Many passing vehicles exhibit their curiosity and several show their support of the project by waving and making inquiries.

The Drop Off - At the Common Ground School there is an enormous compost pile, comprised of farm waste, wood chips from the city’s park department, and organic waste from the school’s cafeteria. The barrels of waste provide an additional 100 lbs of organic material daily, and eliminate the need for any outside sources (like manure) to be imported from other farms.
